7.3 UPDATE

The whip is an item that has two important functions in the 7.3 update: taming and riding prehistoric creatures.

TAMING

Almost all prehistoric creatures are tamable with a whip, with the exclusion of fish, nautilus, quagga, and mobs that are tamed by scarab and aquatic scarab gems. To tame them, one must repeatedly right-click the animal with the whip. Each time the mob is hit, its mood decreases, but it becomes more likely to be tamed. This taming process works for all growth stages of animals.

RIDING

A handful of prehistoric creatures are ridable. To ride a mob, it must be tamed and an adult. To ride the creature, equip the whip and right click it. You will then be mounted upon the animal's back. To control the mob, the whip must remain in your hand as you use the WASD keys. When riding aquatic/semi-aquatic mobs, look up and down to ascend and descend. If the whip is not equipped while you are mounted on the mob, it will wander around wherever it pleases.

7.2 UPDATE

The whip is an item that allows you to ride various tamed prehistoric creatures. If an animal is ridable, it must be tamed and of a certain age (that varies for each species). The DinoPedia will say "*Ridable" when the mob is old enough to be ridden. To ride the creature, equip the whip and right click it. You will then be mounted upon the animal's back. To control the mob, the whip must remain in your hand as you use the WASD keys. If the whip is not equipped while you are mounted on the mob, it will wander around wherever it pleases.
